Don’t say we didn’t warn you: Last night’s Oscars broke the records for web traffic in 2013, with Ellen DeGeneres taking the most epic selfie in the history of the word epic — and the history of selfies. The Oscars’ host managed to gather a gaggle of celebrities, including Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie, Bradley Cooper, Kevin Spacey, Jared Leto, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Lupita Nyong’o and Brad Pitt for a picture for the Academy Awards history books.
The Selfie Goes Viral
Ellen Degeneres’s selfie knocked Barack Obama’s ‘Four More Years’ tweet as the most popular tweet of all time Sunday night during the Oscars.
The comedian, armed with her Samsung phone, gathered a few of her closest friends (read: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, JLaw) and snapped a pic. The retweets quickly added up. Within 30 minutes it was nearing Barack Obama’s record of 778,800.
Then, a few minutes later, it happened. Within the hour, the tweet would go on to surpass one million retweets, making it far and beyond the most-retweeted tweet of all time.
The image, which she encouraged to be retweeted, gave her Samsung phone a nice bit of screen time. But it looks like she’s on an iPhone for her personal account.
Someone like Ellen could certainly have a need for multiple phones, but the switch begs the question: did Samsung just pull off one of the biggest and boldest product placements of all time?
And while we can’t deny the amazingness of the picture — which is now the most retweeted image of all-time — the Internet only made it better.
